Value Net Email & News Facilities
Value Net Login users are normally set up with a menu system that allows easy navigation on Value Net’s system. This menu can easily be deleted for more experienced users.
Our menu system has specific entries for E-mail and News, to make using these popular facilities easier access.
For E-mail, we select PINE from the University of Washington. PINE is a visual mail editor with on screen keyboard help. PINE can also be used as a news reader. Other mail programs that are available are ELM and MAIL. PPP users can use either SMTP or the POP3 protocol to access their mail.
For reading news, the menu system selects TIN with the proper options to use our networked news server. This standalone machine provides access for Login users as well as framed users (SLIP/PPP/ Frame Relay) via NNTP. Our news server is dedicated to this function. We carry over 13000 news groups, with emphasis on CLARI.NET, a feed of approximately 300 articles per day with world, US, local, business, sports, and entertainment news from Associated Press and other services.
